Sapa, a serene mountainous town nestled in the heart of Hoang Lien National Park, is a gateway to the beauty and culture of Vietnam’s northern highlands. This peaceful region is home to many ethnic minority groups, including the Dao, H’Mong, Xa Pho, and Giay, each adding their own unique traditions and way of life. Today, Sapa draws in travelers worldwide, enchanted by the region’s vibrant hill tribes, mountain treks, and the iconic terraced rice fields that cascade down the slopes in a breathtaking display of human ingenuity.
The legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail runs through the Truong Son mountain range, stretching across a complex network of 1,600 kilometers of paths, roads, and rivers. This crucial supply route connected North and South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, passing through neighboring Laos and Cambodia, and became operational in 1959.
Today, while large sections of the original trail have been reclaimed by the tropical landscape, over a thousand kilometers have merged into the Ho Chi Minh Road, which extends from Hanoi to Kon Tum in the Central Highland. For those seeking to fully experience Vietnam’s natural beauty and authenticity, the best way to explore the trail is with a local expert guide, either by bicycle or motorbike. This allows for a level of freedom that is difficult to achieve on more popular routes. In northern Vietnam, travelers can follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail from Hanoi to Hue, passing through the historically significant Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Starting from Hoi An, Danang, Quy Nhon, or Da Lat, the journey also takes travelers through the stunning Central Highlands, where diverse ethnic minorities live in the surrounding jungles, maintaining their traditional customs and ways of life.

Located in Thanh Hoa Province, just a 3-4 hour drive southwest of Hanoi, Pu Luong is not exactly a hidden gem, as it sees an influx of visitors during weekends and public holidays. However, it remains much less crowded than popular destinations, with development still relatively restrained and thoughtful. The reserve spans approximately 17,662 hectares and features a dramatic landscape – a fertile valley encased by jagged limestone mountains.
Life follows a timeless rhythm here, where local traditions remain authentically preserved. Traditional hamlets of ethnic minorities rest on stilts above rice terraces that cascade down to the streams, where bamboo waterwheels, with diameters ranging from 5 to 10 meters, still serve the local agricultural needs day and night. These waterwheels add a charming touch to the picturesque and poetic landscape of Pu Luong. Dotted throughout the valley are clusters of atmospheric homestays and eco-friendly resorts, offering some of Vietnam’s most romantic and authentic accommodations, serving as perfect bases to explore the region. Visitors can embark on various outdoor activities, including hiking, cycling, motorbiking, climbing, and kayaking. The reserve also boasts stunning waterfalls, hidden caves, ‘cloud hunting’ experiences, local markets, and delicious home-cooked food, all waiting to be discovered by those who journey to Pu Luong.
