Since its establishment as Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi has been a city of contrasts, from hidden coffee shops waiting to be discovered to the emerging contemporary art galleries; from historical monuments to ancient pagodas and temples and luxurious designer stores. This fascinating city holds deeply its roots and sense of history and has welcomed the modern world. Today, Hanoi is a sophisticated and elegant city, bursting with character.
About 170km (or a 3.5 hour drive) east of Hanoi, you will find Halong Bay, or “Descending Dragon Bay,” a must see destination in North Vietnam. The Bay, which is twice recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features thousands of dramatic limestone karsts -limestone formations rising from the emerald water.
Legend has it that once upon a time, a family of dragons was sent to the Earth by the gods to help the Vietnamese defend the homeland against the northern invaders. The dragons battled by spitting out jewels which turned into islands and islets, linking together to create an invincible wall that protected the country. After defeating the invaders, the dragons fell in love with the peaceful landscape and decided to stay giving the area the legendary name of “Descend-ing Dragons Bay”.
Established as a hill station by the French in 1922, Sapa overlooks a plunging valley of cascading rice terraces, with mountains towering above on all sides.
Sapa is home to many ethnic minorities, namely the H’mong and Yao groups, and a small number of Xa Pho. Most of them live in small villages in modest huts and hamlets scattered throughout the region.
Palaces and pagodas, tombs and temples, culture and history make up Hue, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The once-capital of the Nguyen emperors still resonates with the glories of Imperial Vietnam, even though many of its finest buildings were destroyed during the war.
Hoi An, also Fai-Fo or Faifoo is perhaps Vietnam’s most delightful town. Once a major trading port dating from the 15th to 19th centuries. Hoi An owes its easygoing provincial demeanor and remarkably harmonious old-town to hap-penstance. Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most wealthy towns, a culinary mecca and important tourism center.
Nha Trang is a charming city on the south central coast known for its beaches and the best scuba diving place in Vietnam. The city was once known as Kau-thara under the Champa. Tourists still see the famous Po Nagar Tower perched on a hilltop in the north of the city with breathtaking views over the river and town. Nha Trang is a center for marine science based at the Nha Trang Ocean-ography Institute. The Hon Mun marine protected area is one of four first ma-rine protected areas in the world.
Ho Chi Minh City is a city of contrasts. Wander through timeless alleys to incense-infused temples before catching up with the present in designer malls beneath sleek skyscrapers. The ghosts of the past live on in buildings that one generation ago witnessed a city in turmoil, but the real beauty of Saigon’s urban collage is the seamless blending of these two worlds into one thrilling, seething mass, while a host of new and exhilarating tours get you way off-the-beaten track.
Fringed with white-sand beaches and with large tracts still cloaked in dense, tropi-cal jungle, Phu Quoc rapidly morphed from a sleepy island backwater to a must-visit beach escape for Western expats and sun-seeking tourists. Dive the reefs, kayak in the bays, eat up the back-road miles on a motorbike, or just live the life of a lotus eater by lounging on the beach, indulging in a massage and dining on fresh seafood.
