Throne Hall
Constructed in 1866 after King Norodom moved the capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh, the palace serves as the royal residence, a venue for receiving foreign dignitaries, and a site for royal ceremonies. The complex includes the Throne Hall, Phochani Pavilion, and Silver Pagoda, each with its own unique function. Despite its age, the palace is well-maintained.
Phochani Pavilion
This palace is breathtaking. Under the sunlight, it shines like a diamond with its mix of white and gold colors. Its high towers, a distinct Cambodian feature, give it a unique appearance compared to other royal palaces. The peaceful surroundings, complete with serene landscapes and fluttering pigeons, enhance its charm.
- Silver Pagoda
Located within the Royal Palace grounds, the Silver Pagoda is a must-visit. It houses important Buddhist relics and treasures of Cambodia. This large pagoda highlights the key features of traditional Cambodian temple design, with its curved roofs and beautiful carvings.

- S-21 or Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
For history enthusiasts, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is a must stop.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is located in the Toul Svay Prey neighborhood in the south of Phnom Penh. It looks very different from the other buildings around it, with its old, rundown structures surrounded by barbed wire. The site spans 2,5 hecta and held over 17,000 prisoners.
“Tuol Sleng” means “Hill of Poison” in Khmer, a name reflecting its grim history. Originally a high school, it was converted into S-21, a notorious Khmer Rouge prison and torture center, in 1976. Nowadays, the museum shows photographs of victims, documents about the Khmer Rouge’s crimes, and eerie paintings of torture scenes made by Vann Nath, one of the few survivors.
Visiting Tuol Sleng is an unforgettable experience for anyone coming to Cambodia.
- Killing Fields “Choeung Ek”
After visiting Tuol Sleng, the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek is also the best destination. This site was also used by the Khmer Rouge for mass executions.
Today, it features a memorial to honor the victims, which offers anyone who comes here a sobering glimpse into Cambodia’s past.
- Wat Phnom
One of Phnom Penh’s must-visit pagodas is Wat Phnom. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was built in 1372 to house four Buddha statues brought by the waters of the Mekong River and discovered by Lady Penh. This is how the city got its name, Phnom Penh, meaning ‘hill of Penh.’
Wat Phnom sits on a 27-meter-high hill covered with trees. It’s the only “hill” in the city. As such, it is one of the most important and sacred temples in the capital of Cambodia. Tons of people visit Wat Phnom to pay their respects for lady Penh, pray for good luck and success.
